P.G.T. Beauregard School has had a lifetime of changes. The original building, a courthouse designed by the Feret Brothers, was completed in 1915 and served as the site of judicial business until 1939.

Renovations began in 1940 when a decision was made to convert the courthouse into St Bernard School. For the first twelve years it served as an elementary school hosting both boys and girls from kindergarten to ninth grade.

The first of many additions to the school was the construction of the gym and cafeteria buildings in 1953. It is also the year tenth grade was added. The following year, eleventh grade was added. With more children and more grades to teach, 1955 brought about construction of the main classroom building.

Another first, the first graduating Seniors, emerged from St Bernard School representing the "The Class of '56". Still under construction, the last of the additions were the industrial arts and music departments constructed in 1959.

With the population growing in St Bernard Parish, construction of two new high schools began in 1966. One was built in the city of Chalmette (Andrew Jackson), the other in Poydras. The new high school in Poydras took over the name 'St Bernard High'. And the renovated courthouse was renamed in honor of General Pierre Goustave Toutant Beauregard.

There were now four high schools in St. Bernard Parish. This made segregation between the boys and girls easier in the public high schools. Beauregard, was in charge of schooling young women in the eastern part of the parish. The first all women graduating class made their debut in 1967. The girls attending P.G.T. were known as the 'Little Generals'. For twenty-one years the all girl school took on a sorority like atmosphere. When in 1988 the last graduating class left the courthouse stairs.

P.G.T. Beauregard is now a middle school with the young boys and girls graduating at St. Bernard High. Past graduates hold the memories of P.G.T. close to their hearts. We want to honor these classes with this website.
